Top Priorities for 2020

At least double the number of Utah children able to access state-funded extended-day kindergarten, with a focus on children who are not academically ready to enter kindergarten

Increase the quality of instruction provided by early childhood educators in the public school system

Secure $6 million in ongoing funds to support place-based, high-quality preschool

In 2019, Utah advocates led the effort to create a state-funded, high-quality preschool program and increase awareness of the importance of early childhood education.

  • Passed a bill aligning Utah’s disparate preschool programs and secured $9 million in ongoing funds, so nearly 2,500 children at risk for academic failure can access a high-quality preschool program.
  • Created the Governor’s Early Childhood Commission to help improve policy decision-making, alignment, and coordination of programs and services for children ages zero to six.
  • Launched a statewide public awareness campaign called 5 Before 5: Love, Talk, Read, Count, and Play in partnership with Utah’s largest media organization.

The Alliance for Early Success is achieving large-scale, long-lasting change for the state’s young children by providing our allies with powerful advantages that help them shape Utah early childhood policy.
