National Indian Health Board

The National Indian Health Board (NIHB) is a nonprofit, Tribal-led organization that represents all 574+ federally recognized Tribes in advocating for the health and public health needs of American Indian and Alaska Native (AI/AN) people.

For over four decades, NIHB has been a trusted national partner, advancing Tribal sovereignty, strengthening Tribal health systems, and ensuring that federal and state policies respect and address the unique government-to-government relationship between Tribes and the United States. NIHB provides technical assistance, policy expertise, and advocacy strategies that elevate Tribal voices in health reform, public health infrastructure, and data modernization initiatives.

State allies can call on NIHB to:

Strengthen Tribal–State Collaboration

Partner with NIHB to build authentic relationships with Tribal leaders and governments, ensuring state health policy aligns with Tribal sovereignty and federal trust responsibilities.

Access Tribal Health Expertise

Leverage NIHB’s policy analysis, technical assistance, and training resources to better understand the distinct legal, cultural, and health system contexts of Tribal communities.

Advance Equitable Health Policy

Collaborate with NIHB to co-develop state-level strategies that address persistent health disparities for AI/AN peoples, including in maternal health, behavioral health, and public health preparedness.

Support Inclusive Public Health Systems

Work with NIHB to design and implement state initiatives that integrate Tribal perspectives, honor data sovereignty, and foster shared accountability for improving health outcomes across all communities.

Facilitate Coordination and Capacity-Building

NIHB helps states and Tribes connect, share ideas, and strengthen systems together — providing guidance and resources while honoring Tribal sovereignty and the leadership of Tribal Nations.

When AI/AN communities are strong and healthy, entire states thrive. By collaborating with Tribes and NIHB, states build stronger public health and Tribal health systems, creating healthier futures for everyone.
