Black Mamas Matter Alliance

BMMA (Black Mamas Matter Alliance) is a network of Black-led/Black women-led organizations and multi-disciplinary professionals, whose work is deeply rooted in reproductive justice, birth justice, and the human rights framework, to ensure that all Black Mamas have the rights, respect, and resources to thrive before, during, and after pregnancy.

BMMA is the premier Black Maternal Health professional organization focusing on building the skills, convening, and mobilizing the global Black perinatal, maternal, and reproductive health workforce to END maternal mortality.

State allies can call on BMMA to:

Provide specifically tailored technical assistance support to advance stakeholders’ policy and advocacy goals.

Provide learnings on best practices in community engagement in research projects, focus group discussions, and other topics across Black Maternal Health and reproductive health equity.

Provide key stakeholders policy solutions through their comprehensive, issues-based Policy Agenda to inform legislation in their states.

On the Ground:

  • BMMA works with their alliance partners and external stakeholders across different states through advancing and developing legislation, facilitating convenings, creating digital programs and/or activations, promoting programs, and educating the perinatal, maternal, and reproductive health workforce.
  • BMMA advances literacy by creating accessible, culturally relevant resources and trainings that equip Black women, birthing people, and the broader maternal health workforce with knowledge on their rights, care options, and policy issues.
  • BMMA has produced a multitude of issue briefs, reports, and literature in collaboration with a range of stakeholders to advance Black Maternal Health, shaping policy, research, and practice through community-driven advocacy and scholarship. Some examples include:
    • Pregnant Workers Fairness Act Report in collaboration with A Better Balance
    • Maternal Mortality Review Committee Issue Briefs and Report
    • Setting the Standard for Holistic Care of and for Black Women-Black Paper
    • Provide the Black Maternal Health Week Resolution template (nationwide and locally)
