Michigan 2018 Truth Tour

2018

Bridge Magazine at the Center for Michigan launched a year-long Truth Tour to engage and inform Michigan residents on the most critical issues facing the state (including early childhood) while fighting misinformation and politics throughout the campaign year.

Their mobile news and citizenship van toured Michigan with almost 100 stops across the state from April through Election Day in November. The Center for Michigan partnered with community leaders to hold town hall meetings and documentary screenings, discuss substantive local and state issues, distribute Michigan Facts & Issue Guides, give attendees an opportunity to meet spokespuppy Truth Dog, and cover and fact-check prominent campaign events in each area.

Michigan Truth Squad
A political fact-checking service for vetting of campaign claims by four leading candidates for Michigan governor, the Truth Squad fact-checked candidates’ (and interest groups’) commercials, websites, social media feeds, public statements, and even the mailers that landed on front porches. Truth Squad helped citizens sort the pronouncements and claims on all sides of politics – including the races for governor, attorney general, Michigan House and Senate, and potential ballot issues.

Michigan Solution Summits
The Center for Michigan and Bridge Magazine gathered dozens of experts and stakeholders in March at four locations across the state to factually ground the 2018 elections in the biggest substantive issues facing Michigan. Issues included Michigan’s infrastructure, the health of cities, balancing economic growth and natural resources protection, and Michigan’s education performance crisis and what to do about it. The summits highlighted lessons from other states and a call to action for 2018 candidates to develop robust policy platforms for Michigan’s future.

Michigan’s Children “Sandbox Party”
The Sandbox Party set out to engage voters and candidates during the campaign season because “it’s time for Michigan lawmakers to get their hands dirty for children, youth, and families.” The Sandbox Party was a project of Michigan’s Children, a statewide independent voice working to ensure public policies are made in the best interest of children.
