At the state level, advocates are encouraging policymakers and agencies to make changes and innovate in order to better support the early education workforce. 

Michigan Pre-K Certificate

Michigan’s Birth to Kindergarten Certificate Professionalizes Early Learning Workforce

National Association of State Boards of Education — To better equip teachers of young children and professionalize the early childhood workforce, Michigan’s State Board of Education has created a birth-K certificate that incorporates emerging and developmental skills specific to babies and children through kindergarten. Kentucky Early Educator Task Force

Kentucky Convenes Task Force on Early Grades Educator Preparation and Professional Learning

Alliance for Early Success — The Task Force on Educator Preparation and Professional Learning: Literacy and Numeracy for Primary Grades was formed in summer of 2020 and was composed of legislators, teachers and principals, students, postsecondary and K-12 education leaders, and advocates. The group studied and considered policy recommendations on issues related to early literacy and mathematics as well as teacher preparation and development. (June 2021)

Illinois Legislation Establishes the Early Childhood Workforce Act To Address Racial Inequities in Compensation and Higher Education Access

Alliance for Early Success — In the fall of 2020 Illinois' Legislative Black Caucus held a series of hearings to develop its agenda, and because of long-standing relationships built on trust and respect, advocates were invited to highlight early childhood issues and to make recommendations to be included in the package which included the now-enacted Early Childhood Workforce Act.
